Lessons

ISR swim instruction is for children 6 months to 6 years with all one-on-one instruction.  Lessons are conducted 5 days a week (Monday through Friday), at a maximum of 10 minutes a day, for approximately 6 weeks.

What your child will learn depends on his or her age and developmental readiness, but in all cases, at minimum, your child will learn to roll onto his or her back to float, rest, and breathe, and to maintain this position until help arrives.

Rollback to Float

Children 6-12 Months Old

Generally speaking, children ages 6 months to 1 year learn the ISR Self-Rescue skill of rolling onto their backs to float, rest and breathe. They learn to maintain this position until help arrives.

Swim-Float-Swim

Children 1-6 Years Old

Older, more mobile children will learn the full ISR Self-Rescue sequence of swimming until they need air, rotating onto the back to float, then rolling back over to continue swimming. ISR students are taught to repeat this sequence until they reach the safety of the steps, side of the pool, or the shoreline.

Scholarships

ISR believes that every child is entitled to self-rescue skills. We try to ensure access to families with a serious interest in swimming and self-rescue lessons. Several non-profit organizations (most founded out of the profound loss of a child to drowning) offer scholarships for ISR Self-Rescue lessons based on need. Scholarships do not cover the initial non-refundable registration fee.

These non-profit organizations are separate from ISR but work closely with ISR Instructors. Each organization has its own application process, so contacting them directly is the best route for information on applying for and receiving scholarships. Please inquire with and apply to one organization at a time. Only one organization/scholarship per student is available.
